Leaving her native in Sweden in her late teens, Anna Maria spent some time living in the Netherlands, Middlesex in the UK and Toluca, Mexico, before settling more permanently in London. Her early, less-than-illustrious, career included numerous different jobs, none of which were too inspiring (cashier, sandwich-maker, English teacher, travel agent and translator among others).
After completing a degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies at Birkbeck College, London, while working full-time in the travel business, the travel bug got the better of her and she gave up her job to spend eight months travelling the world, collecting travel stories, ideas and recipes along the way.
Since 2006 she’s been combining her love of travel with her love of writing, full-time, as a travel and food writer, braving assorted earthquakes, robberies and tropical disease while on the road. Of the 90+ countries visited to date, Scandinavia and Latin America are her main areas of specialisation. In recent years she’s branched out into new areas of writing, including creative non-fiction, young adult fiction and horror/fantasy. She also gives talks and workshops at travel shows, private functions and literary festivals.
When Anna Maria isn’t travelling and writing, she can usually be found doing yoga, skiing, ice-skating, spending quality time with cats, trying to pick up tricky languages (such as Welsh and Catalan) or cooking something delicious from a far-flung corner of the world.
